As Hurricane Florence approaches the NC coast, we're hustling to button down and stay safe. In doing so, we’ve come across a few things to be aware of, some of which, we weren’t! Here’s a quick checklist we’ve compiled from The National Weather Service, FEMA, and our own experience. 

When planning to evacuate, you may want to continue to follow preparedness measures in the event that evacuation is stalled. 

Hurricane Preparation Checklist

  • Have a disaster supply kit ready!
  • Compile basic emergency supplies
    • At least one gallon of water per person for three day
    • 3-day supply of non-perishable food
    • Battery-powered or hand craked radio
    • Flashlight
    • First aid kit
    • Moist towelettes (baby wipes)
    • Garbage bags
    • Plastic ties for personal sanitation
    • Charged backup battery for your cell phone
    • Sunscreen
    • Bugspray
    • Portable camp stove or grill
    • Blanket or sleeping bag per person
    • Anti-bacterial hand wipes or gel
    • Blanket or sleeping bag per person
    • Essential medications
    • Bar soap, toiletries
    • Cash and change
    • Duct tape, rope
    • Camera, books, games, cards, etc.

• Check batteries in all flashlight, lanterns, and radios.  

• Have access to an emergency air horn and/or flares.

• Secure all items outside of your home. 

• Have an evacuation plan ready. 

• Locate local shelters.

• Store valuables and papers in waterproof containers.

• Let loved ones know where you plan to be during the storm.

• Ensure your weather radio is in working condition. 

• Secure insurance. 

• Move valuables and appliances out of the basement. 

• If you plan to evacuate, have a copy of your home insurance policies with you.
