105 Stratford Road, Jacksonville
Ogden, Portners Neck & Northern Wilmington
With place names like Middle Sound, Futch Creek, and Oyster Point, it's easy to understand why so many residents in this area of town are avid watersports enthusiasts! The northern tip of New Hanover County was once a predominately rural area whose vast acreage wound in and out by the waterway, its creeks and marshland. Along with family farms, there was a commercial dairy and a substantial boat building operation-Bennett Brothers Yachts. Today, the northern section of Wilmington is home to numerous new residential developments plus established waterfront and water access subdivisions.
Living in the Community
Several communities are situated along the Intracoastal Waterway while others are located near tidal, saltwater creeks or heavily wooded lots. Although all of the conveniences of city life are just minutes away, much of this part of the county still has a rural feel. In fact, since this part of town is outside of the city limits, there are even a few horse farms around! Most of the newer residential areas boast large lots and built-in amenities such as swimming pools and tennis courts. Many residents enjoy properties with designated boat docks and community ramps, such as Demarest Landing and Bayshore. The gated neighborhood of Porter's Neck is known for its gorgeous homes, country club and challenging golf course. A favorite nearby attraction is Ogden Park, which is Wilmington's largest park. It features 125 acres, 3 lighted baseball fields, a lighted softball field, 2 lighted soccer fields, 6 lighted tennis courts, playground, picnic areas, jogging paths and a dog park.
Depending on which direction you're headed, Market Street or Highway 17 gives folks on the north end of town easy access to Topsail Island, Surf City, Mayfaire and Wrightsville Beach. Since the Pender County line is just a short drive up 17 North, getting to historic Poplar Grove Plantation is a snap. The former peanut plantation and living history site is home to one of the local spring and summer Farmer's Market and a new dog-friendly walking trail.
