Topsail Beach

Topsail Beach Real Estate & Area Information

Topsail Island is only a short drive along Hwy17 from either Wilmington (northward) or Jacksonville (southward).  However, it is a world away compared to the hub-bub and stress of its big city neighbors. The island of Topsail is located in both Onslow and Pender counties. The 26-mile long stretch is comprised of three charming little beach communities: Surf City, Topsail Beach and North Topsail Beach. From Wilmington, the closest access is over the quaint Surf City swing bridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway. Hang a right if you’re headed to Topsail Beach and a left if your destination is North Topsail.

Topsail Beach Homes & Community

The southern portion of Topsail Beach is filled with a mix of older style beach cottages, condo communities and new construction. Although it has its fair share of vacation rentals there are over 5,000 permanent residents on the island, which make for a true sense of community. The beach strand along this end is wide, unspoiled and spectacular. The Jolly Roger Fishing Pier is a perfect vantage point to survey south Topsail’s endless beauty. Area surfers flock here for nice waves and the uncrowded breaks. There are ample public beach accesses and several have restrooms and showers.

Most of the businesses are of the mom and pop variety, which only adds to Topsail’s appeal. A sidewalk stretches for miles along the main Beach Rd. and makes long walks, jogs and beach cruiser treks a snap! There is an eclectic mix of interesting shops, excellent small restaurants, putt-putt golf, and even a live music venue or two! The legendary roller-rink is still in business along with the Karen Beasley Turtle Hospital. Read about those two local institutions here: http://www.ourstate.com/topsail-beach-skating-rink/  and http://www.seaturtlehospital.org/

Another unique point of interest along Topsail Island is the former missile tracking towers that stand along the island. They are remnants from a post WWII Naval project known as Operation Bumblebee. The ghostly white 2-story cement structures stand like sentries and at least one has been converted into a spectacular contemporary beach house!

Another feather in Topsail’s cap is how affordable property is. We would love to show you a few of our current listings and maybe if you want to see some in person, we’ll have time to try the Breezeway Restaurant’s famous She-Crab and hushpuppies!

Try flying Google Earth up and down the east coast of the United States. Fly low over the barrier islands that dot the landscape. Zoom in. Most are heavily developed, or they are in the National Park system, or a state park system, or otherwise under the control of the myriad environmental agencies or nonprofits that acquire such properties. Now, land on Lea Island just north of Wilmington. Look around. It's only a few miles from a vibrant metropolitan area. But it's a world away. On most days of the year, you might have the place to yourself. Magical and eerily deserted, except of course for the thousands of birds of various species, the shy marsh rabbits, the regal osprey, the noble horned owl, the occasional fox, the hard working raccoons, and the rare big buck who swims over from the mainland to escape being hunted. Step into the surf. You won't be alone. A pod of porpoise might swim by so close you can hear them breathe. Or you may see a sand shark cruising the sloughs on the hunt for the Red Drum that meander along the break, or pelicans diving on vast schools of menhaden or finger mullet just out of casting range. Bring a beach chair, a cooler of beer and a good umbrella. Bring a surf rod if you want to catch dinner. Or just sit there and soak it all in. You will be sitting on one of the last wild places along the eastern seaboard where you can actually own a piece of it. It is not a place for the faint of heart. But it is a place for those with a bold imagination. Give us a call and a little notice and we will load up our skiff and show you the way in. It takes a little practice to find just the right place to land.
